Empowering Researchers through Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Research Instrument Development

Abstract

The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides new opportunities to improve the efficiency and quality of research activities, particularly in research instrument development. This community engagement program, entitled “Empowering Researchers through Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Research Instrument Development,” was conducted through the ICMA program on February 15, 2025. The program aimed to strengthen participants’ research competencies by introducing the application of Generative AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Machine Learning (ML) in developing research questions, questionnaires, interview guides, and other research instruments. A participatory training approach was implemented through conceptual presentations, practical demonstrations, hands-on exercises, discussions, and reviews of instrument quality and research ethics. The activity highlighted the potential of AI to support question formulation, indicator identification, language improvement, and the preliminary evaluation of research instruments. The results of the activity indicate that AI can support a more efficient and systematic instrument-development process. However, AI-generated outputs require critical evaluation, theoretical alignment, expert review, pilot testing, and consideration of validity, reliability, privacy, and potential bias. The program emphasized that AI should function as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for researchers. A human-centered approach is essential to maintain methodological rigor, research integrity, and contextual appropriateness. The activity contributes to research capacity building by encouraging researchers to integrate emerging technologies with established research methodology and ethical principles.
